GBP is the three-letter ISO code of the Great British Pound, which is the national currency of the nations that make up the United Kingdom and its overseas territories.

Often referred to as the pound sterling in order to differentiate it from other currencies that use the word pound, it is actually the world’s oldest currency and has been in continuous circulation in one form or another since its inception.

Pounds sterling were originally silver coins used by the Anglo-Saxons, with 240 silver pennies weighing in total a pound of silver. GBP is the world’s fourth most traded currency behind the US dollar, euro and Japanese yen.
